RationalWikiWiki talk:Privacy policy
From RationalWikiWiki
I think we should discuss making a privacy policy, about what kinds of information we do and don't record about RW members. Partly this is inspired by RW rethinking its policies at the moment (which seems to have started from RWW anyway), but also overspill from the recent thing about PC/BS. OK, that was my mess & I didn't realise it would be seen as a privacy issue. But I don't really agree with the comments other users made that a site of this nature should have no privacy policy & anything we can uncover about people is fair game. The user rights page says 'hide revisions' is "to be used in the case of someone posting personal information" which shows that RWW does have some kind of privacy limits, but these aren't defined anywhere. That's why I think we should build this page.
My own opinion is that we should confine the info we post about people to what they say themselves at RationalWiki, or at any other site they have identified themself as editing at. E.G. If a RW user page mentions that user's account at Wikipedia, it is fair to mention things they have said about themselves there as well as at RW. I think we should draw the line at posting info about people's location based on their IP address; indirectly the user has made the info available, but it's still a bit creepy to trace them like that. & Any info that only comes from email contact with a RW user should not be posted without their permission.
If any RW user does object to the info posted about them on privacy grounds (however it was obtained), we should take their objections into account. Maybe take the offending info out temporarily while we discuss it & decide whether to delete or reinstate it.
Those are my thoughts. Anyone else please comment. weaseLICIOuS Bite Me
- I agree with all of Weaselicious' suggestions above, although I would add another requirement: no pictures of a user may be uploaded unless the picture is already on RationalWiki. Hans Johnson I'll get my hans on it 04:06, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds good - theoretically, RWW meticuluosly footnotes its "facts", at the very least to RW difflinks. Human 02:14, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
- Since there's been no further comment, I've gone ahead & written up the policy page. weaseLICIOuS Bite Me 01:13, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

I can't cite their IP address? Oh, gosh darn it; I've already bookmarked numerous RationalWikians' IPs. Oh, well. Hans Johnson I'll get my hans on it 06:45, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, this is open for discussion. I must admit I have occasionally looked up RWians' locations based on their IP address before, out of my own curiosity. But I think noting it down on wiki is a bit invasive. weaseLICIOuS Bite Me 14:06, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
